Professional Biography

Dr. Joan Wakasa Murumba is an information scientist, faculty librarian, educator, researcher, and higher education leader with more than 18 years of experience in teaching, academic librarianship, digital learning, emerging technologies, and academic administration. Her interdisciplinary career bridges African and U.S. higher education contexts, bringing a global perspective to her scholarly and professional work. Dr. Murumba鈥檚 current scholarship and practice focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and related emerging technologies, with particular emphasis on information and AI literacy, research support, teaching and learning, the responsible and ethical integration of AI, and faculty collaboration. She is committed to examining how academic libraries and higher education institutions can meaningfully integrate AI and emerging technologies into curricula, research, and scholarly practice in ways that are responsible, inclusive, and responsive to rapidly evolving information environments.

An experienced educator, Dr. Murumba has taught Library Science, Information Science, and Knowledge Management. She has extensive experience designing and delivering instruction, integrating information and AI literacy into curricula, and collaborating with faculty on teaching and research initiatives. Throughout her career, she has supported students and researchers across the research lifecycle while advancing technology-enabled learning and academic services.

Before her work in U.S. higher education, Dr. Murumba built a strong record of academic, library, and technology leadership in Kenya. She served as Head of the Campus Library at Kenya Methodist University in Nyeri and later held several leadership roles at Karatina University, including Head of the Department of Computer Science and Informatics, Director of Open, Distance and E-Learning, and Acting Director of ICT. Following her leadership roles in Kenya, she served as Information Literacy Librarian and Head of the Research Desk at Texas A&M International University before joining The University of Toledo as an Assistant Professor.

Her administrative experience encompasses academic and technology leadership, digital transformation, strategic planning, organizational management, technology-enabled education, and cross-functional collaboration. She also contributes to the profession through professional associations, committee service, and scholarly and peer-review activities.
