Conflict of Interest Disclosure

The University of Toledo ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Medicine and Life Sciences (COMLS), The University of Toledo Medical Center (UTMC), and University of Toledo Physicians (UTP) are committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and professionalism in education, patient care, research, and business operations.

Conflict of Interest (COI) disclosures help identify, assess, and appropriately manage situations in which personal, financial, professional, or outside interests could influence, or appear to influence, decisions made on behalf of ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½.

Disclosure allows the institution to:

  • Promote transparency and accountability
  • Protect the integrity of patient care, research, and medical education
  • Meet accreditation, regulatory, and policy requirements
  • Ensure appropriate oversight of actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest
  • Support faculty and staff in engaging in valuable outside activities while maintaining compliance with institutional standards

Many outside activities, including teaching, research collaboration, consulting, speaking engagements, professional service, and other academic activities, are expected and encouraged. The existence of a conflict of interest does not necessarily indicate wrongdoing or prohibit participation in these activities. Rather, disclosure allows these relationships and activities to be reviewed and managed appropriately.

Important: A conflict of interest does not necessarily imply wrongdoing. This disclosure process is intended solely to identify, evaluate, and manage actual, potential, or perceived conflicts in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.

Conflict of Interest Management Plan

What Is a Conflict of Interest Management Plan?

A Conflict of Interest (COI) Management Plan is a written document that outlines the steps necessary to appropriately manage a disclosed actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest.

As part of our ongoing commitment to integrity, transparency, and compliance, the Healthcare Compliance Department has implemented a standardized approach to managing Conflict of Interest disclosures across ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ Health and the ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ of Medicine and Life Sciences.

Many outside activities, including teaching, research collaborations, consulting, professional service, speaking engagements, and other academic or professional pursuits, are encouraged and supported. A conflict of interest does not mean an activity is prohibited. Rather, it means the activity must be appropriately disclosed and managed.

In some situations, a disclosed activity may require additional oversight to ensure transparency, maintain public trust, and comply with institutional policies and regulatory requirements. When this occurs, a Conflict of Interest Management Plan may be implemented.

Having a management plan does not mean you have done anything wrong. It simply means that a disclosed activity requires documented oversight and appropriate safeguards.

Why Are Management Plans Important?

Management plans help:

  • Promote transparency and accountability
  • Protect patients, learners, research participants, and institutional interests
  • Ensure objective and unbiased decision-making
  • Demonstrate compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements
  • Allow individuals to continue approved outside activities while appropriately managing potential conflicts

What May Be Addressed in a Management Plan?

Depending on the nature of the disclosed activity, a management plan may include guidance related to:

  • Time commitment and role separation
  • Appropriate use of institutional resources
  • Disclosure requirements
  • Research oversight
  • Patient care considerations
  • Confidentiality and data protection
  • External communications and representation of ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½

Your Responsibilities

If a management plan is issued, you are expected to:

  • Review and understand the requirements of the plan
  • Comply with all applicable provisions
  • Notify Healthcare Compliance if circumstances change
  • Update your Conflict of Interest disclosure whenever new activities or interests arise

We Are Here to Help
